Toys of Deculture: a few words about the title of the exhibition

Toys of Deculture: a few words about the title of the exhibition

a few words about the title of the exhibition

The word deculture is a neologism which due to the prefix seems to have a negative meaning.  It is a word appearing in the Japanese anime series Macross Frontier. In the Macross Universe deculture means forget your own culture and learn to accept people not for what culture they are from, but from the fact that you share your own culture that you build with another species. It is initially used in a negative sense and gradually in a positive sense as the series goes on. Deculture may express shock, disgust or even awe.

Using the word deculture, we had in mind the blending of all cultures into the creation of a global culture whose vehicles (people) are not defined by racial, ethnic, linguistic or geographical features but through contemporary means of communication such as the internet and the social networks. The production of objects has invaded everyday life reaching the limits of totalitarianism.

We presented our artworks as indicative toys - examples of deculture to raise consideration on today's interactive way of creating modern culture, the importance of visuality and the effects of a world-wide fabulous culture of commodity.

100 posters for Crete

Last night, we attended a graphic design poster exhibition held in Chania. It is organized by Omen Art Shop Gallery, the Region of Crete, the Regional Unit of Chania, the Municipality of Chania and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania. The  exhibition showcases 100 posters made by 100 graphic designers who were invited to create a poster about Crete. Copies of these posters are available at a very low price and the money raised will support two organizations for children with disabilities.

The exhibition will be open until August 18th 2017 at Firkas fortress in the old harbor of Chania on Crete from 10 a.m to 5 p.m and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

We encourage people to visit Firkas and not miss this exhibition. We surely enjoyed the posters and their messages.

Best wishes for a successful exhibition!

Toys of Deculture

Toys of Deculture

our first group exhibition as the Mighty Gorgonion

This summer, we presented our first group exhibition "TOYS OF DECULTURE" as the Mighty Gorgonion with the support of the "KAM" Centre of Mediterranean Architecture at Gate Sabbionara in Chania. The duration of the exhibition was seven days, from June 7th to June 13th 2017.

We presented two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks created over the last three years.

The theme of the artworks was the constant invasion of the production of objects in all spheres of everyday life that reaches the limits of totalitarianism. Objective of our exhibition was the reflection on today's interactive way of creating modern culture and the effects of a world-wide fabulous culture of commodity. At the same time, we attempted to raise the issue of the culture of vision and the importance of the visual in contemporary life.

The exhibition was a great success for the Mighty Gorgonion and we would like to thank the Centre of Mediterranean Architecture that gave us the opportunity to showcase some of our latest artworks. More than 400 people visited the exhibition and we are grateful and pleased that so many people were interested in our artwork. We would like to thank all the visitors and we hope you thoroughly enjoyed your visit and our hospitality. We enjoyed all the feedback. Thank you.
